The situation
About 57,000 Ontario school board workers in CUPE's school board council vote on a strike mandate from 4 to 18 November, and teachers' unions vote this month too. Contracts expired at the end of August, talks with the province have stalled, and a mandate needs more than half the votes but does not by itself mean a strike. It is the night before voting opens and you chair the central bargaining committee. The education assistants' local wants a loud yes. A rural local president fears strike pay will not cover his members' rent. The custodial local wants staffing on the table.
